Optimum Nutrition was founded in 1986 by brothers Tony and Michael Costello, initially operating under the name Costello Health Suppliers. Additionally, Optimum Nutrition’s sports supplements are marketed under the brand American Body Building.

Over the years, the company has established a wide supply chain spanning the United States, Europe, and other regions worldwide. Through the combination of top-notch products and effective marketing strategies, Optimum Nutrition, American Body Building, and Costello’s Health Distributors quickly gained prominence within the sports nutrition industry.

One of the company’s flagship products is the Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein, which remains a best-seller in numerous countries.

In 2008, Optimum Nutrition was acquired by the multinational food company Glanbia. Despite this acquisition, media reports that Optimum Nutrition continues to operate as a fully independent division, functioning as a subsidiary under the Glanbia umbrella.
